  • St Benedict’s School has become one of the sponsors of the festival (Diamond Partner), supporting some particular discussions like “Double Cross, Double Bill: Spies in Fact & Fiction.”
  • The event is dedicated to Agatha Christie’s youth in Ealing 50 years after her passing with the participation of authors Cathy Rentzenbrink and Sophie Hannah.
  • In addition, other local residents of Ealing include filmmaker Tony Palmer and Sue Elliot, a historian.
  • As mentioned by the Director of the festival Torin Douglas, one third of the houses in Chiswick are situated in the Borough of Ealing.
  • It should be noted that the festival keeps up the traditions of helping the community and reading charity organizations, specifically Read Easy Ealing; they have collected £170,000 since the establishment of the festival in 2009.

London (West London Times) — September 8, 2026 — The 18th annual uk/local/hounslow/chiswick/">Chiswick Book Festival is reinforcing its historical and cultural ties with the neighboring Borough of Ealing through new institutional partnerships, local author spotlights, and literary programming.

The festival, which runs from September 9 to September 14, 2026, has announced that St Benedict’s School in Ealing has come on board as a Diamond Partner. The school will sponsor the Saturday afternoon “Double Cross, Double Bill: Spies in Fact & Fiction” sessions, featuring Ealing-based author Alex Gerlis interviewing fellow spy novelists Charles Cumming and Jane Thynne.

Festival Director Torin Douglas spoke on the evolving regional collaboration. As reported by The Chiswick Calendar, Torin Douglas stated that: “We’re delighted that St Benedict’s is further strengthening our Ealing links by becoming one of our Diamond Partners. A third of Chiswick’s homes lie in the Borough of Ealing and for several years we held our own events with Gunnersbury, Pitzhanger Manor and the University of West London until Ealing set up its own book festival again.”

The deep-rooted connection traces back to the festival’s origins. The Chiswick Book Festival originally grew out of the Ealing Literary Festival, which was held in Chiswick in 2007 and 2008. Decades later, the Ealing Book Festival returned in 2024 with the active support of its sister festival in Chiswick.

What Ealing Connections and Authors Are Featured in the 2026 Programme?

The 2026 line-up puts a heavy emphasis on local heritage. Most notably, the festival will mark 50 years since the death of Agatha Christie by examining her early life spent in Ealing. Authors Cathy Rentzenbrink (The Agatha Christie Cure) and Sophie Hannah (The Last Death of the Year: A Hercule Poirot Mystery) are set to explore the legendary crime writer’s enduring appeal.

Additional local perspectives come from acclaimed filmmaker Tony Palmer—director of the 17-part TV documentary series All You Need Is Love: The Story of Popular Music—and historian Sue Elliott, whose book Trent Park House: A Century of Secrets explores local history.

Reflecting on the partnership from the educational sector, St Benedict’s PR & Communications Manager Dina Potier commented on the collaboration. As reported by The Chiswick Calendar and Ealing.news, Dina Potier stated that:

“Our partnership with the highly successful Ealing Book Festival has been enormously valuable in strengthening community connections and celebrating the importance of reading and the written word – and we are delighted to extend this to the Chiswick Book Festival.”

St Benedict’s School further emphasized its institutional ethos regarding the event. As covered by The Chiswick Calendar, representatives of St Benedict’s School noted:

“As a school with a strong commitment to literacy, reading and the arts, we are keen to support initiatives that promote a love of books and learning within the local and wider community. Events such as Chiswick Book Festival play an important role in bringing families together, inspiring young readers and fostering engagement with literature across all ages.”

Background of the Particular Development

The strengthening of ties between the Chiswick Book Festival and the Borough of Ealing represents a consolidation of West London’s literary ecosystem. Historically, the geographic overlap has always been tight, with approximately one-third of Chiswick falling under the administrative boundaries of the London Borough of Ealing. Over the past two decades, cultural infrastructure between the two areas has fluctuated—beginning with the Ealing Literary Festival events in Chiswick in 2007–2008, followed by the establishment of the independent Chiswick Book Festival in 2009.

Over the years, the Chiswick festival maintained cross-border cooperation with institutions such as Gunnersbury Park, Pitzhanger Manor, and the University of West London (which has sponsored the Chiswick event since 2017). Following the successful resurgence of the Ealing Book Festival in 2024, both community initiatives have actively sought to cross-promote literacy, share institutional sponsors like St Benedict’s School, and pool resources to champion local authors and community reading charities such as Read Easy Ealing.

This deepening integration between the Chiswick Book Festival and Ealing-based institutions is anticipated to yield long-term positive benefits for local audiences, students, and regional literacy advocates. For the local community and school-aged audiences in West London, the formal alignment of these literary hubs increases accessibility to high-profile cultural events and encourages youth engagement with the arts.

By securing stable, multi-year sponsorships from community pillars like St Benedict’s School and maintaining relationships with higher education institutions like the University of West London, the festival secures its financial resilience. Consequently, this cross-borough cooperation ensures that readers, aspiring writers, and families across both Chiswick and Ealing will continue to benefit from expanded educational workshops, charitable fundraising, and a robust platform celebrating regional literary heritage for years to come.
